Jane Elson Class

Welcome to Jane Elson (Year 5):

Within this section of the website, you will find useful information you (or your child) may need for their learning; including information on trips, P.E days, homework, timetables and much more.

Meet the team:

Mr Tyson

Miss Beaumont

Key Information:

P.E: This is a crucial part of the curriculum and one in which all children should participate. All children in the school will have two hours of timetabled sport and P.E per week. If your child is unable to take part (due to a medical reason) please provide a note. Our P.E. days will be on Monday (Indoor P.E) and Wednesday (Outdoor P.E). Children are allowed to wear suitable P.E kit to school on these days and remain in their P.E kit all day. As our outdoor PE is currently football, children need to bring in a spare pair of shoes so that they do not bring mud from the field back into the classroom - these can be football boots. Please remember that all long hair needs to be tied back and earrings removed. It would be beneficial that children come to school on those days without earrings in if possible, please.

Homework is given out weekly in year 5. It is both given out and collected in every Friday.
For maths this will often be in the form of an activity on MyMaths.

We will also set weekly spellings to be learnt at home. These spellings will be tested on a Friday.

Please encourage your child to read as much as possible outside of school. It would be useful for all children to read a range of genres and authors over the course of the year as this will develop their knowledge and understanding substantially. We expect all children to complete at least three reading entries per week and hope that children in our class will aim even higher than this and possibly target five entries per week. Children who complete five entries will be entered into our weekly prize draw.

Upcoming School Visit: TBC.

Curriculum Outline:

Autumn 2022:
The autumn term is a very exciting one in year 5! We are will be studying the topic ‘Fair Trade’ during the second half term. During our topic we will look at what fair trade is and how it impacts different people.

This term we will be reading ‘The Highland Falcon Theif’ in our guided reading sessions and begin the second Autumn topic by looking at the short film 'Oktapodi' and then basing our learning around 'Clockwork’ by Phillip Pullman in our English sessions.

Our maths will begin with looking at Multiplication and Division and we’ll be discovering all about Forces. In P.E, we will be doing tennis (indoors) and football (outdoors).

If you need to contact me, please email:

I will respond to emails between 8 am and 5.30 pm during our working days.

We can’t wait to begin the new academic year with a bang!
Mr Tyson.
