Maths
Maths at All Saints’ C of E Primary School:
At All Saints’ C of E Primary School, we hold a deep-seated belief that every child deserves not just access to mathematics, but an enriching experience that fosters mastery and inclusivity. Our vision to teaching mathematics is rooted in a commitment to the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach, ensuring that every child has the tools to understand and excel in all areas of mathematics. Our curriculum is adapted from White Rose Maths, with additional supplementations from elsewhere to ensure children have a wide, well-rounded exposure to various materials to ensure a deep understanding of each, sequential small step. In addition to this, we follow Mastering Number throughout KS1, and a bespoke arithmetic plan throughout KS2, with two taught sessions purely focusing on the taught arithmetic concept, and two sessions applying the selected arithmetic focus into problem solving and reasoning activities.
Purposeful Mastery
Our journey in mathematics is one of purposeful mastery. We understand that true understanding comes not just from rote learning, but from deep engagement and exploration. By carefully crafting our curriculum to align with the National Curriculum and principles of mastery teaching, we ensure that each child progresses through small, purposeful steps, mastering each concept before moving forward. Our curriculum fosters a culture where every child can achieve excellence, guided by highly effective teaching methods.
Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract Approach
Our commitment to the CPA approach ensures that mathematics comes to life for all our students of all attainments. Starting with concrete manipulatives, such as Numicon, base-ten blocks, place value counters, we allow children to experience mathematical concepts first-hand. Moving to pictorial representations, we bridge the gap between the concrete and abstract, enabling students to visualize, internalize and fully understand mathematical ideas. Finally, we introduce abstract symbols and notation, cementing their understanding. Our teachers seamlessly transition between these stages, ensuring that each child grasps concepts deeply.
Learning Through Mastery
At All Saints’, we believe that mathematics is for everyone. Our rigorous curriculum, steeped in the principles of mastery, provides opportunities for all children to excel. Through sustained levels of challenge and varied activities, we cultivate resilient and confident learners, breaking the perception of “I can’t do maths.” By embedding the CPA approach, we ensure that every child has equitable access to mathematical understanding, regardless of their starting point, and are able to apply their learning into increasingly complex problem solving and reasoning activities.
Inclusive Learning Environment
In our pursuit of mastery, inclusivity lies at the heart of everything we do. We recognize that every child learns differently, and we celebrate this diversity in our classrooms. Through collaborative learning, utilising the effectiveness of mixed ability pairs, individualized support, and a rich mathematical vocabulary, we empower every student to succeed. Our commitment to inclusive teaching extends beyond the classroom, with targeted interventions and support systems in place to ensure that no child is left behind.
Conclusion
At All Saints’ C of E Primary School, our vision for mathematics is one of mastery and inclusivity. Through purposeful teaching, the CPA approach, and a nurturing learning environment, we equip every child with the tools they need to excel in mathematics and beyond. Our journey is guided by the belief that every child can achieve greatness, and we are dedicated to supporting them every step of the way.
