What Parents & Educators Need to Know About Discord
This week’s #WakeUpWednesday guide focuses on Discord, a popular communication platform where users can chat by text, voice and video and join online communities based around shared interests.
While Discord can be a positive way for young people to socialise and connect with others, it also presents a number of potential online-safety risks. These include contact with strangers, inappropriate content, online harassment, excessive screen time and in-app spending.
The guide below explains some of these risks and provides practical advice for parents and carers, including using Discord’s Family Centre, reviewing privacy settings, setting appropriate boundaries around online time and encouraging children to speak to a trusted adult if anything online makes them uncomfortable.
We encourage parents and carers to take a few minutes to read the guide and, where appropriate, use it as a starting point for a conversation with their child about staying safe online.
