Five Tips to Encourage Reading for Pleasure – Cracking the ABC Code

Children will read in school, both as an individual and in groups.  We also ask that children aim to read for 10 minutes each day at home and complete at least 3 reading entries but aim to complete 5 as part of their homework routine. The children will be shown how to complete a reading entry in order to help their understanding. We value your contribution too, please record any comments or questions regarding your child’s reading in their diary.

Children are welcome to select books from the library or choose their own from home. Those who are not quite ready for free reading will continue with the school reading scheme, Rhino Readers, and progress through each stage until they have acquired the skills needed to make the transition. If your child is not a free reader, in addition to their self-chosen book they will also bring home a banded reading book, these will be changed once a week on a Monday. Books should be brought into school every day. Here is a list of suggested books to read in year 4:

The Homework Debate

Homework:

This will be set in order to consolidate children’s learning and understanding. We ask that you encourage and support your child to complete these tasks. By the end of Year 4, children are expected to know all of the times tables facts up to 12x12; they will complete the national multiplication check in the final summer half term. Evidence shows that those children who complete 20 minutes practise each week on TT Rockstars achieve full marks on the Multiplication Check. Therefore, this will be the expectation each week. Additional Maths homework will be uploaded on to ‘My Maths’ every Monday. Spellings will also be set on a Monday, children should learn these ready for a spelling quiz the following Monday.
