Phonics and Early Reading
Learning to read will unlock the whole world!
At All Saints' we follow the Twinkl Phonics Scheme and the accompanying reading scheme, Rhino Readers, which was trialed by our children and proved very popular.
Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about our Phonics Scheme:
What is Twinkl Phonics?
A full systematic synthetic phonics programme, endorsed by schools and DfE validated. It covers preschool up to year 2 SATs, with interventions for KS2 and has been written and created by experienced educators.
What does DfE validation mean?
Twinkl Phonics is validated by the Department for Education, which means that it has been assessed and awarded the status of a validated scheme, meeting the criteria for an effective SSP programme. This requires the programme to: 'provide all that is essential to teach SSP to children in the reception and key stage 1 years of mainstream primary schools, up to the standards expected by the national curriculum, and provides sufficient support for them to become fluent readers'
Does Twinkl Phonics follow the same sound order as Letters and Sounds?
Twinkl Phonics follows the same sounds order throughout nursery and reception, through to the early weeks of year 1. Teaching of Phase 5 and Phase 6 GPCs and suffixes have been spread out in Twinkl Phonics to give more even coverage throughout year 1 and year 2, in order to ensure new learning is secured at each stage. All GPCs covered in year 1 have been carefully chosen to prepare children for the Phonics Screening Check. The teaching weeks that fall after the check in year 1 contain new alternative sounds or skills in preparation for year 2.
