Science Intent Statement

At All Saints’ CE Primary and Nursery School, our science curriculum supports our vision to nurture a safe, loving and inclusive environment where every child is valued and celebrated as an individual. Through high-quality science teaching, we encourage curiosity, self-belief and resilience, enabling all pupils to explore and understand the world with confidence and care.

From Early Years through to Key Stage 2, our intent is to provide a coherent and progressive science curriculum that develops scientific knowledge, enquiry skills and vocabulary, while fostering a compassionate and respectful attitude towards others and the world we share. Rooted in Christian values, our science curriculum empowers children to persevere through challenge, ask thoughtful questions and recognise their responsibility to care for God’s creation.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), science learning is embedded within Understanding the World. Children explore, observe and investigate through play-based and first-hand experiences in a supportive and nurturing environment. They are encouraged to talk about what they notice, ask questions and develop early scientific language, building confidence and a sense of wonder about the world around them.

In Key Stage 1, pupils build on these foundations by developing a more structured understanding of scientific ideas. They learn to observe closely, carry out simple tests, identify patterns and begin to record their findings. Teaching promotes curiosity and perseverance, helping pupils develop confidence in their abilities while understanding how science explains everyday phenomena.

In Key Stage 2, pupils deepen and broaden their scientific understanding across biology, chemistry and physics. They are taught to plan and carry out fair tests, control variables, collect and interpret data, and draw conclusions using evidence. Pupils are encouraged to reflect, collaborate and communicate respectfully, developing resilience and independence as scientists while considering how scientific understanding can be used responsibly to make a positive impact on the world.

At our school, children are encouraged to think, reason and work as scientists using a range of scientific enquiry skills:

Across all phases at All Saints’ CE Primary and Nursery School, we intend for pupils to:

  • Feel safe, supported and valued as they explore and investigate scientific ideas.
  • Develop secure scientific knowledge and enquiry skills appropriate to their age and stage.
  • Use scientific vocabulary confidently to explain their thinking.
  • Show resilience and perseverance when faced with challenge.
  • Develop compassion and respect for others and for the natural world.
  • Understand their role in caring for creation and contributing positively to society.

Our inclusive and ambitious science curriculum is carefully sequenced to build progressively on prior learning from EYFS to KS2. By the time pupils leave All Saints’ CE Primary and Nursery School, we aim for them to be confident, reflective and scientifically literate learners, equipped with the self-belief, values and skills needed to carry their principles into later life and make a positive impact on the world.
